Advantages of Open Source - Commonly no licensing fees
- Most applications are composed of relativity small modules that can easily be combined. This allows to re-use once developed components, but also gives the possibility to combine different products.
- To further develop individual applications the source code can be modified.
Risks of Open Source- The business models and service structures of most Open Source products are not always clear and partially only rudimentary developed. This carries a certain risk e.g. in cases services that are not available in-house may also not be contracted on the market.
- Decision processes in Open Source projects are not consistent and partly not foreseeable. There is e.g. the theoretical chance that a project may be terminated from one day to the other.
